What to Stream This Weekend

15 August 2024

Another weekend, another slate of new streaming TV shows and movies to watch across all your favorite streaming apps. We have some new seasons of older shows, movies finally making their way from theater to streaming, and plenty more.

Tales Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Paramount+)

This very retro-animated TMNT show looks like fun. And both critics and audiences are giving it a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. You don’t see that very often! This one appears to be geared at younger audiences, and rightfully so. The synopsis reads: “The Turtles, as teenagers, deal with their new life as heroes while also dealing with the pressures of going to high school in New York City.”

The Bikeriders (Peacock)

A 1960s Chicago motorcycle club evolves from a gathering place for local outsiders to a sinister gang, threatening the original group's way of life..

The Instigators (Apple TV+)

This trailer makes the new heist movie starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck look really fun, and maybe it is, but the new Doug Liman-directed crime dramedy is faring pretty poorly with both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a shame. Still might be some good mindless entertainment, especially if you enjoy Boston accents. (We recently rewatched Good Will Hunting and man, what a great movie).

Mr. Throwback (Peacock)

Follows an unfortunate memorabilia salesman who hopes to find forgiveness by reconciling with NBA legend Steph Curry, a teammate from his sixth-grade years.

Industry Season 3 (HBO / Max)

“In season three, as Pierpoint looks to the future and takes a big bet on ethical investing, Yasmin, Robert, and Eric, find themselves front and center in the splashy IPO of Lumi, a green tech energy company led by Sir Henry Muck, in a story that runs all the way to the very top of finance, media, and government,” the Season 3 logline reads. “Since leaving Pierpoint, Harper is eager to get back into the addictive thrill of finance and finds an unlikely partner in FutureDawn portfolio manager Petra Koenig.”

Despicable Me 4 (VOD)

Gru, Lucy, their three girls, and the Minions return with new baby Gru Jr. in this comedy blockbuster that finds the family on the run and adopting new secret identities.

Borderlands

Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland (Hart), a seasoned mercenary on a mission; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound protector; Tannis (Curtis), the oddball scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Black), a wiseass robot. Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other. Based on one of the best-selling videogame franchises of all time, welcome to BORDERLANDS.
