The HyaPak Journey: Meet the Obama Leader Transforming Invasive Plants into Eco-Friendly Plastics

1 March 2025

In the heart of Kenya, a remarkable innovation is taking root, driven by the vision and determination of Joseph Nguthiru, a 2023 Obama Foundation Africa Leader.

Nguthiru's journey began in 2021 when he and his classmates found themselves trapped in Kenya's Lake Naivasha, surrounded by a dense mat of water hyacinth, the world's most problematic aquatic weed. This experience sparked the idea to transform this invasive plant into a sustainable solution for single-use plastics.

Nguthiru founded HyaPak Ecotech Limited, a Kenyan-based startup that converts water hyacinth into biodegradable alternatives for single-use plastic products. Initially focusing on items like straws and plastic plates, HyaPak pivoted to producing biodegradable packaging bags and seedling wrappers, addressing Kenya's ban on single-use plastic bags. This innovative approach not only tackles plastic pollution but also mitigates the environmental impact of water hyacinth, which obstructs waterways and disrupts local ecosystems.

HyaPak's technology involves harvesting water hyacinth, processing it into biodegradable materials, and manufacturing products that decompose within 3 to 6 months. This process creates a circular economy, reducing carbon footprints and improving the socioeconomic livelihoods of communities affected by water hyacinth. To date, HyaPak has eliminated over 700 kg of water hyacinth from Lake Naivasha.

The startup's success has garnered recognition, including winning the 2023 Solv[ED] Youth Innovation Challenge. HyaPak's partnership with the Kenyan government aims to integrate its innovation into the country's Forestry and Land Restoration Acceleration program, Jaza Miti, which commits to planting 15 billion trees over the next decade. Additionally, HyaPak's efforts are backed by the Obama Foundation, which supports Nguthiru's mission to create sustainable, eco-friendly solutions.

Nguthiru's journey exemplifies the power of innovation and sustainability. By turning a pervasive problem into a viable solution, HyaPak is paving the way for a greener future, one biodegradable product at a time.
