Moon Calling: NASA and Nokia to launch the first cellular network in Space; Here’s all you need to know

26 February 2025

In a historic step for space exploration, NASA is preparing to deploy the first mobile network on the Moon.

A network that survives the harshness of Space

The mobile network will enable high-definition video streaming, command-and-control communications, and telemetry data transfer between the lander and lunar vehicles.

According to Thierry Klein, president of Nokia Bell Labs Solutions Research, this network is designed to wit ..

“We put all these components in a single ‘network in a box,’ which contains everything needed for a cell network except the antenna and a power source,” Klein told MIT Technology Review.

The mission will also involve two lunar mobility vehicles: the Intuitive Machines Micro-Nova Hopper and Lunar Outpost’s Mobile Autonomous Prospecting Platform (MAPP) rover.

These vehicles will use Nokia’s device modules to connect to the network established by the Athena lander. This network will likely operate for only a few days due to the lunar night, but the technology holds promise for future lunar missions.

The success of this mobile network on the Moon lays the foundation for NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface by 2027.

Nokia’s long-term goal is to expand this network to support sustainable human activities.

Did You Know

What will be the actual purpose for the Moon's new 4G network?
NASA and Nokia are set to deploy the first mobile network on the Moon as part of the IM-2 mission. Utilizing Earth-based cellular technology, the network aims to support high-definition video streaming and communication on the lunar surface, setting the stage for future lunar missions under NASA's Artemis program. The signal from cellular networks travels by means of electromagnetic waves, which do not require an atmosphere to propagate. The lunar surface has less clutter than Earth since there are no trees, buildings and structures.
