China Eastern Airlines plans to commence flights between Dublin Airport and China this summer.

Headquartered in Shanghai, the airline is one of the three major state-owned aviation transportation groups in China.

As a member of the SkyTeam Airline Alliance (SkyTeam), China Eastern has an aviation transport network covering 1,050 destinations in 166 countries and regions.

A spokesperson for DAA said the airport operator was happy to confirm that the airline would be commencing a service to and from Dublin, however, details on frequency of the routes are yet to confirmed.

Meanwhile, the airport operator said it “warmly welcomes” the appointment of Darragh O'Brien as the new Minister for Transport.

“We warmly welcome the appointment of minister O’Brien whose pragmatic approach and first-hand knowledge of the challenges of the planning system will be a big asset as we work to resolve the Dublin Airport passenger cap issue,” Sarah Ryan, director of communications, at DAA said.

“As a former Fingal county councillor, he fully understands the economic impact of Dublin Airport at both a local and a national level, as well as the importance of aviation across the island in connecting Ireland with the world.”

DAA chief executive Kenny Jacobs has already written to minister O’Brien to congratulate him on his appointment, Ryan said, and to “welcome the new government’s commitment to working together to lift the passenger cap as soon as possible. We look forward to working with him and his team.”

It is understood that in his letter to minister O’Brien, Jacobs said DAA welcomes the prioritisation of policies that enhance Ireland’s connectivity.

In the letter, it is understood Jacobs outlines six key priorities for DAA including progress lifting the passenger cap, the re-classification of Dublin Airport as strategic infrastructure, the introduction of deadlines for planning decisions, and noise mitigation for the local community.
