Aldi Ireland And Too Good To Go Mark Two Years Of Partnership

9 March 2025

Aldi Ireland and Too Good To Go are celebrating the second anniversary of their partnership which has seen 250,000 Surprise Bags of food saved from going to waste.

This key milestone marks the substantial impact the partnership has made on the environment and communities across Ireland.

Too Good To Go is an app that connects with restaurants, cafés and retailers such as Aldi to sell food that is about to go to waste for a discounted price, helping shoppers save money while preventing unnecessary food waste.

To celebrate the 250,000 Surprise Bag milestone, Aldi and Too Good To Go are giving shoppers the chance to win a €2,500 Aldi gift card.

To enter, simply purchase an Aldi Surprise Bag on the Too Good To Go app between 23 February and 24 March and register your contact details and order number here.

Bags Saved

Over the past two years, the highest number of bags were saved in December each year, highlighting the importance of the service during the crucial pre-Christmas period.

Fridays have also consistently been the most popular day of the week for saving food, indicating strong community engagement right before the weekend.

The record for most Surprise Bags – which gather an array of items from the supermarket for shoppers – saved in a single month was set at the start of the partnership in December 2023.

The highest number of bags saved in a single day was more recent however, on 24 December 2024.

This further highlighted the service’s significant impact during the period just before Christmas.

The partnership also made a significant environmental impact, avoiding a total of 675,000kg of CO2 emissions, contributing to a more sustainable future.

For context, the average Irish person emits 78kg of CO2 per year.

In addition to this, the partnership has saved 202,500,000 litres of water – the equivalent of 81 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Tackle Food Waste

As fellow Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Champions for the 2024-25 programme, Aldi and Too Good To Go are working together to tackle food waste nationwide while also minimising its impact on the environment.

Aldi has committed to reducing its food waste by 50% by 2030 through reporting, waste reduction, food redistribution and exploring value chains, resulting in less consumable food being sent to anaerobic digestion.

In 2018, Aldi was among the first supermarkets to join the Retail Action Group’s Food Waste Charter, committing to a long-term approach to tackling food wate, recommitting to this in 2023.

"A Meaningful Impact"

Commenting on the milestone, the national sustainability manager at Aldi Ireland Rachel Nugent said, “We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone with Too Good To Go.

“Saving over 250,000 Surprise Bags in the past two years is a testament to our commitment to reducing food waste and supporting our communities – this is just the beginning of the work we are determined to do.

“This achievement emphasises the dedication of our team and the incredible support from our customers, who have embraced this initiative wholeheartedly.

“We look forward to continuing this journey and making even greater strides in the fight against food waste through this partnership.”

The sales manager at Too Good To Go Machaela O’Leary added, “At Too Good To Go, our mission is to ensure that good food is enjoyed, not wasted, and working with Aldi Ireland has been incredibly rewarding.

“Together, we’ve made a meaningful impact in saving food from going to waste, while offering customers great meals at an affordable price.

“The success of this partnership demonstrates what we can achieve when businesses and communities come together for a common cuase.

“It’s a win-win for everyone involved, and we’re excited to keep evolving out partnership with Aldi.”

Aldi’s Too Good To Go Surprise Bags cost €3.99 each and contain at least €12 worth of food approaching its sell-by or use-by date. They can be saved at Aldi’s 163 stores across Ireland.
